Macomb County Body Shop Gives Driver Safety Tips

Most people don’t think about the impact an auto accident can have on their life – until it happens.

Some car accidents simply can’t be avoided by even by the best driver. The good news is, there are certain things you can do that may prevent an auto accident from happening.

Here are 6 ways to help anyone become a better driver, avoid an accident and possibly even save a life.

Always Leave Yourself an Out

Did you know most auto accidents happen in the left lane? By using the center or right lane on multilane roads, you will give yourself more “escape routes” if suddenly you need to avoid a dangerous situation.

Always Scan At Least 10 Seconds Ahead

Instead of just focusing on the bumper in front of you, watch the traffic in front of that car as well. Scan to where you will be driving to in about 10 seconds. This will increase your chance of seeing a problem while you still have enough time to react in a safe manor.

Approach Intersections With Caution

It can be very easy to hold down the gas pedal as soon as the light turns green – especially if you’re in a hurry.

Look both ways and be sure no one is trying to speed through a yellow light. Even though you have the right of way, always be mindful of any oncoming traffic.

Limit Distractions

Put the phone away. That text message is not worth your life or anyone else’s. It may just feel like a second or 2 but it only takes a second to find yourself in a life threatening situation. There are some accidents that can’t be avoided but an accident involving texting certainly can.

Also, avoid applying make-up, eating or basically anything that takes your attention off of the road.

Attend High Performance Driving School

Performance driving school will allow you to practice accident avoidance maneuvers in a safe, controlled environment. Learning how to handle your vehicle in dangerous situations will help you learn how to react instead of making panicked decisions if and when things go awry on the road.

Limit Nighttime Driving Whenever Possible

Although nighttime driving is unavoidable at times, if given the choice, stay off the road at night to decrease the likelihood of an accident. If you do drive at night, drive extra defensively. After dark you have increased fatigue, decreased vision and a higher chance of joyriders or drunk drivers.
