Collision Shop Near Fraser, MI Explains 6 Ways Technology is Preventing Auto Accidents

Technology has come a long way within just the last twelve years. In 2007 there was the debut of the first iphone. Fast forward to 2019 and we have several smart phones, smart homes and smart car technology.

Vehicle safety features include blind spot warnings, electronic stability control and camera sensors that will prevent collisions. These features are meant to assist the driver, not replace them (at least not yet) so drivers shouldn’t throw too much caution to the wind. But when these safety features are paired with alertness and defensive driving, they certainly can make the road a safer place.

Electronic Stability Control (ESC)

Steering-angle sensors can detect a lack of traction and automatically apply the breaks to keep the vehicle going in the intended direction and prevent any “spinning out”.

Electronic Stability Control has been mandatory in all new cars in the U.S. since 2012.

Forward Collision Warning (FCW)

Forward Collision Warning (FCW) will provide drivers with audible and visible warnings if a potential collision is detected in front of the vehicle. Limited breaking is also applied, giving the driver enough response time to maneuver the vehicle and avoid a crash.

Rear Backup Camera

Immediately after putting the car in reverse, drivers will see the surroundings behind the vehicle on their main touchscreen. This helps prevent backing into other vehicles or pedestrians. Similar to the Forward Collision Warning, audible warnings and light breaking is applied when the vehicle approaches a potential collision behind the vehicle.

Audible warnings will also sound if sensors detect any motion in your direction when the car is in reverse. For example, if you are backing out of a parking spot and another driver is headed down the road behind you, looking for parking spots.

Blind Spot/Lane Change Warning

Visual warnings will occur when sensors detect another vehicle in your blind spot. For example, a small section of  your review mirror will light up on the appropriate side of the vehicle.

If you engage your turning signal in the direction where a driver is in your blind spot, audible warning will occur in addition to visual warning.  As convenient as this feature is, stay in the habit of checking over your shoulder as snow, dirt and other conditions may alter the accuracy of the sensors.

Smartphone Pairing via Bluetooth

Many vehicles are equipped with bluetooth technology, allowing drivers to pair their mobile devices to the system for hands free talking while driving.

No more reaching for your phone when it rings or taking off your eyes of the road to send a text. The phone will ring through the speakers of the vehicle and drivers can answer the call by simply pressing a button on the steering wheel.  Drivers can take a call or speak their text messages through the speaker system.

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS)

Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TMPS) have been mandatory in the U.S. since 2007 on all new vehicles.

The TMPS will warn the driver of low tire pressure if the tire pressure falls below the warning limit for any reason and will continue to warn the driver as long as the condition exists.  It’s no surprise that this feature is mandatory as it helps prevent major blowouts and fatal accidents.
