1. Not Using A Microfiber Towel or Cloth
While it might be tempting to reach for any old towel you have on hand, you can actually undo your hard work by doing so. Regular towels will grind dirt and dust into your vehicle and may even leave micro-scratches on your car.
Instead, make sure to use a microfiber cloth or one that’s specifically designed for vehicles. Microfiber towels are soft and more absorbent and will therefore effectively clear out water residue. Plus, they are also good at absorbing dirt and impurities from the vehicle’s surface, so you get that clean and clear finish.
2. Skipping Winter Washes
Washing your car in the winter can seem counterintuitive and simply a wasted effort. But drivers should wash their cars at least once a week to prevent a build-up of road salt and moisture. This could be done at home or at a car wash, as long as you maintain weekly washes to rinse off damaging debris.
3. Cleaning from Top to Bottom
For most cleaning tasks cleaning from top to bottom seems like the right strategy to get the most thorough level of clean. When cleaning your vehicle, you’ll want to start at the bottom. Reason being, the wheels are one of the dirtiest parts of a vehicle containing brake dust, mud and other debris.
Saving the wheels for last can kick up dirt and grime onto the freshly cleaned portions of the your exterior – undoing your hard work. Instead, start with the wheels and tires and notice just how much cleaner your car looks by the end.
4. Cleaning in Direct Sunlight
A sunny afternoon is likely your ideal time to head outside to clean your car. But cleaning your car under direct sunlight can be problematic if you’re looking for a flawless finish. The extra heat from the sun can quickly dry up the water and soap mixture, leaving your vehicle with difficult-to-remove water spots.
