Tips for a Safe Road Trip This 4th of July (and All Summer Long)

Summertime is the perfect time for road trips and family getaways. By following these safety tips you can prevent dangers or delays caused by vehicle issues.

Plan for a Safe Road Trip Before You Leave

1. Have your vehicle inspected by a professional mechanic

At least a week before your road trip, have a professional mechanic inspect your vehicle. Trained professionals have the tools and experience to spot any necessary maintenance or repairs needed for long-distance driving that otherwise may go unnoticed. By scheduling an inspection a week out, you can ensure that there’s enough time for any necessary repairs to be completed before you depart.

2. Ensure the trailer hitch is secured correctly

Before towing a trailer to your vacation getaway, ensure the hitch is secured correctly. The pin that holds the safety latch should be securely attached, and the correct-sized ball should lock the hitch in place.

3. Check the auto insurance policy for available resources in case of emergencies

If you haven’t already, it’s always a good idea to check your auto insurance policy for available resources in case of driving emergencies. For example, some policies cover emergency roadside assistance or towing if you encounter vehicle problems while on the road. Keep emergency numbers readily available if you need to call for help.

4. Make sure luggage is properly secured

Any unsecured luggage can cause serious issues while driving, like a lack of visibility or an accident. When securing luggage in your trunk, ensure you have complete visibility in your rearview mirror and that the trunk closes completely and latches. If you plan to store suitcases on a luggage rack, use the proper ropes and straps to keep everything secure.

Make sure luggage is properly secured.

Stay Safe While on The Road

Preparing for your road trip is half the battle. The other half is staying vigilant when behind the wheel.

Switch drivers every few hours: On longer road trips, switch drivers every 2-3 hours to avoid drowsy driving, which can lead to driving mistakes or even falling asleep while behind the wheel.

Plan your road trip around daytime driving: Nighttime driving comes with its own set of risks, including fatigue, lack of visibility, and nocturnal animals on roadways. Avoid those risks by planning your road trip around daytime driving instead.

Keep an eye on fluid levels (including gas): Monitor fuel and fluid levels throughout your trip. If you notice any issues with overheating, pull over when safely possible to check coolant levels and refill if necessary.
